The government has agreed in principle to compensate the families of civilians and government officials killed in the troubled Deep South. This will help lessen the longstanding conflict in the Muslim-dominated region.
The amount of compensation will be based on the same criteria used for the families of those killed in political violence during the past five years.
According to Pol Col Thawee Sodsong, director of the Southern Border Provinces Administrative Centre (SBPAC), there are specific cases that fall under this reconciliation programme. They include the families of those killed in the army assault on Krue Se mosque in Pattani province on April 28, 2004, and the families of Tak Bai protesters in Narathiwat province. The protesters died of suffocation while being transported to an army camp on Oct 25 of the same year.
