Minivans and safety

Re: ''Safety push for public minivans'' (BP, Feb 6).

Operators of public vans must be held responsible for the safety of their passengers. So, immediately issue special legislation which contains the following conditions/requirements:

1. Instead of monitoring vehicles by any other means, tachometers sealed by the authorities must be installed on all public vans and their records manually collected daily by the authorities. If any tampering of these meters is found, the concerned van operator (owner) shall be punished, regardless of whoever did the tampering.

Re minivans. The author forgets that he is in Thailand, where no-one has any real concerns about public safety in vans or anywhere else. If something happens, it is fate and preordained. Almost every law is rarely enforced, the authorites can be bribed, and taking away a driving licence - if they have one or if it is genuine - would have no impact whatsoever.
Western standards simply do not apply in Thailand, and trying to suggest to the locals how they can bring things up to Western standards is a total waste of time. They are not in the slightest bit interested.
Live with it, and just be careful out there.

Minivans and safety. If they cannot stop the police from taking bribe all your suggestions are useless. So what if they are caught speeding? Just pay 200 baht to the police and you are on the road again.
Discussion #9 is correct. In Singapore all commercial vehicles are installed with orange light on the top of cab. When the driver hit 70K/H only the light starts blinking. And there is pi pi pi sound to warn the driver that he is speeding. It works in Singapore coz the police there are not the same as Thailand.

Why not like Singapore? Have an Orange light on top of the mini van cab which starts blinking when driving over 90 K/H. A large telephone number of the owner at the back may also proof a deterrent. All trucks in the West have a device which records speed and stop time, it work there, maybe it works here to?

Justfacts #3, whilst the Tachometer is primarily used for measuring the rotation speed of a shaft or disk, it is still a very useful instrument. Maybe what is really needed is a tachograph, which will enable the police to see if the driver has been speeding and for how long he/she has been driving. IMO.

    Civilized Debate
Why does anger have to turn into full blown violence ? Anger is an honest emotion .Why do people have so little self control ? People like to pretend how calm and collected they are when underneath they are ready to explode .

Why the passenger vans (not minivans) drive so dangerously?

    1. They have to spend at least half an hour to fill up the CNG.
    2. They have to meet the number of trips as required by the owner.
    3. The 'fast' lane is always being occupied by slow vehicles, so they have to pass on the left and then weave back to the faster lanes. All these with high speed of course, because there is no enforcement by the police.

Traffic safety is not on the agenda of this or any government because not much money can be made from it for the politicians and senior officials. The only thing they do (actually just talk) is to publicize the road safety week a few times a year.

RH Suga, please tell me how you propose that a tachometer that measures RPM's is going to determine any of the things you suggested. You can very easily have a tach showing 3000 rpm and going 90kph as you could register 3000 rpm and be going 20kph ,depending on the gear you are in.

Dom, Pretty funny stuff from a red short apologist. Don't I recall Abbhisit offering to talk to red shirt leaders in debate and they did the exact opposite - they lead their followers to vent their anger by killing, burning and looting.
