Nitirat's call to amend Article 112 of the Criminal Code has become a political hot potato. Many people are afraid the controversy may escalate into a political crisis or even a major catastrophe resulting in heavy loss of life. Their fears are unfounded.
If people of opposing views stick to reason and academic debate, there will be no violence. However, it is crucial that the government and Thammasat University's administrators adhere to the spirit of democracy and freedom of expression, and respect human rights.
Last week, Thammasat rector Somkid Lertpaithoon issued an order barring the Nitirat group, which comprises the university's law lecturers, from organising political activities on the campus. The ban has drawn mixed reactions, with people voicing their opinions for or against Nitirat.
