Bikers in Bangkok don't bother with rules

The safety issue regarding motorcycles is complicated by one serious problem. I refer to the flagrant abuse of traffic laws and good sense.

From my soi, if the motorcyclists turn left onto Sukhumvit, they ride on the road. But if they need to go right, then they ride on the sidewalk against traffic on the adjacent road. They ride past a hospital, past Wat That Thong and through a busy bus stop to get to the Ekamai BTS station. There are many elderly people and young students milling around in that area and the danger everyone faces is very real.

Whatever is decided regarding new regulations for motorcycles, safety must be given top consideration. As an American, I live in Thailand in part because I am sick of over-regulation in America. But seeing scooters here riding foolishly through crowds of people on a daily basis, with police often standing by ignoring them, is beyond my comprehension.

Kane: You already mentioned that seeing scooters here riding foolishly through crowds of people on a daily basis, with POLICE often standing by ignoring them. Even the POLICE don't bother with rules, how do you expect the Bikers to obey the rules.

I have often seen 1 bike with 4 people on it. The rider, the wife, 1 boy sit in front the rider, another boy sit in between the rider and wife. What so amazing is only the rider wear helmet but not the rest? This tells me that in Thailand father life is more precious than his wife and children’s. They ride pass the POLICE often standing by but ignoring them too.

Actually, Dao, the police do quite a lot about crime. For one thing, they commit most of it.

Most letters today relate to law enforcement .The police wont enforce the law unless there is some money to be made easily with out doing any work .A wall of shame should be set up to high light all the crime the police dont do anything about so they have one of their famous crackdowns and pretend to get serious about the law for a weekend .

In Thailand, there are two over-riding sentiments for driving: Lack of courtesy, and abject selfishness. Eric, I'm surprised with your views on the world, that you still reside in a place like Pattaya.

Lax of law enforcement is the main cause of road accidents here and noboby give a hoot. Even BP, with its motoring section, rarely touch on this subject.

For a country that has so many, many laws its amazing how a high percentage of the population ignores and breaks them regularly. Is there no sense of respect and responsibility for others in the community?. When there is no real leadership based on real moral and ethical codes, those that are governed follow those above them. If the patrons wont follow the rules the clients are not far behind...
