Thai Rath Comment

The opposition Democrats risk falling into political oblivion if the party does not improve its performance.

Party leader Abhisit Vejjajiva failed to shine in his first censure debate against the Yingluck government over its handling of last year's flood disaster. His shadow cabinet, tasked with monitoring the work of Pheu Thai cabinet ministers, also has nothing to show.

Some young and inexperienced Democrat MPs have been put in charge of handling the party's daily meetings with the press, while veteran MPs remain on the sidelines. Also, the performance of Chalermchai Sri-orn, who replaced veteran politician Suthep Thaugsuban as party secretary-general late last year, has been rather slipshod.

Saying the Dems risk falling into oblivion if they don't improve their performance is like saying Puea Thai won the last election by a landslide when in fact they got 40% of the vote. It's the only party in the country that has a wide-spread support base (ie beyond Suphan Buri, or Buri Ram) and made up of real politicians rather than factions and family dynasties. It will outlive all the others, even if never gets to scale the heights of success of the Shinawatra party.
