Charging 30 baht won't improve healthcare

Re: ''Rural doctors aren't helping'' (BP, Editorial, Feb 9).

The editorial would have made a good, though obvious, point had it left off after saying that the Rural Doctors Society had exaggerated the impact of re-imposition of the 30-baht charge for medical treatment.

As it is, to proceed with your own exaggerated claim that the Society's statement would weaken public faith in the dedication of RDS members in providing universal healthcare, suggests another agenda.

30 baht or free the name has changed a few times .It depends who the latest person is who wants to claim credit for it .30 baht is not a lot of money and if someone couldn't produce 30 baht in Thailand which is more developed than all its neighbors then we have more problems than healthcare .
Jatuporn like Chalerm is just a mouthpiece used to stir unrest and draw attention away from things like the charter rewrite which will be Thaksin's get home free card .

The editorial's point was, ill educated people will go to the doctor for almost any ailment, since they don't know enough to self medicate, and of course it's free, and they might have lots of time to waste. Start charging 30 baht and there will be less unnecessary visits burdening stretched resources. Those who are truly too poor to afford 30 baht can be registered for free medical. I seriously doubt that 30 baht is too much for 90% of the population, 30 baht is what many might spend on lao kao every few days.

I doubt if this will happen for many decades in Thailand, but the Ministry of Health should be promoting energy healing. Western medicine does not accept modern science's now old discovery that everything is made of vibrating energy. Human beings too. When you treat the source of the negative energy in people, the illness goes away, and indeed you also prevent illness breaking out. To help the poor, the Ministry should be teaching them energy healing techniques. I realize that the pharmaceutical industry will be upset, but does this matter?
