Undue anxiety on day of love

Today is Valentine's Day. Actually, no reminder is really necessary. It is almost impossible to miss the celebration of Cupid, the god of love. Thailand has not just adopted this very Western occasion, but has almost made it an institution.

There will be a huge number of weddings at Bangkok's Bang Rak district today, because its name means ''community of love''. There will be skydiving weddings and undersea weddings. Hotel banquets and buffets and special dinners will be everywhere.

And, of course, what would a traditional Thai Valentine's Day be without the noisy, widespread warnings from our guardians of the state about what our enfants terribles are plotting to do?

I don't know if Feb 14 is the 'traditional Thai Valentine's Day' - I thought, and I may be wrong, that Thailand didn't celebrate saints of the catholic church. This day has been commercialized beyond belief - in many parts of the world and is almost like Christmas now in thailand. My Thai wife told me her research showed that Hallmark greeting cards invented the 'romantic version' of the day - I'm not sure of the history. We show our love to each other every day and we don't need a card, rose or chocolates to prove it.
