A shocking picture

I have been a reader of the Bangkok Post for the 22 years that I have lived in Thailand and on many occasions you have written very well about wildlife conservation and animal welfare issues.

It is for that reason that I was extremely shocked to see a monkey performing with fire on your front page (May 13) with no reference to the animal's torture involved here.

Unfortunately wild animals are made to perform all over Thailand in the tourism industry _ macaques in monkey shows, dolphins caught from the wild at Pattaya, loris babies on the beaches of Phuket and Pattaya, gibbon babies in Samui, Krabi and Phuket and captive born and wild-caught elephants around the whole country.

Discussion #14 The problem that your Governor moonbeam will face is that there is a hard left majority that will refuse any cut in handouts to their pet causes and illegal friends. Like you I cannot see any way out for CA until the inevitable crunch comes - Greek style.

rubyridge Discussion 11 : I could not blame governor moonbeam on the 16 billion deficit alone, its the union who sat on fat cat that break the bank, it will be very hard to solve that problem no matter who the governor is period! Just hope that they don't cut education, peace officer and firemen. I have no problem in paying more taxes as proposed by governor moonbeam.

    Dom Dunn discussion @12

I have spent nearly two decades here. Because the requirements for permanent residence are prohibitively complicated and expensive, I still manage to stay year-to-year, because our modestly successful business (barely) makes enough of a profit to pay the minimum taxes required to keep my visa/work permit in good stead. If I am forced to leave because suddenly my income is not enough, I am not in a position to take my family anywhere else. So we will be separated. I am sure my situation is not unique. Therefore I am considering the possibilities in Myanmar.

I hope you are not as insensitive as your question suggests.

    Airborne D6.

Do you think this would be a great loss to Thailand?

Guy Baker, At least we are going to have a chance to get rid of the guy. I guess his legacy will be to make Jimmy Carter the second worst president. Wonder when them California boys will wise up and get rid of governor moonbeam and his 16 billion deficit that CNN refuse to comment on in an election year

Airborne, you are probably right about the income requirement being increased. However, I think it's unlikely to happen for at least 2 years as the Boss has more than enough on his plate at the moment, and will have even more when he returns. I have several foreign friends with a Thai family who will really struggle, unfortunately, when it happens.

Guy Baker opinion: 'Same old same old'. The Deputy Prime Minister wants people sentenced to death for drug offences executed within 15 days.. That'll certainly save crooked police from detected for planting drugs and extorted money from the innocent... All their victims will be dead!

Thank you for giving the animals a voice .They are exploited every way possible .

Arnone:Good point!Renaissance:Indeed!Baker should follow his own advice.

  • Discussion 6 : 14 May 2012 at 08.356

Renaissance D2 - You may not have noticed over the past few years, being busy to be a local Thai and all that, but the boss doesn't want you here if you don't have a decent income. One of these days he is gong to throw out another net (ie. raise the income requirement) and sweep a few thousand expats out of here.
