Let's talk about Bangkok's floods

You may not be aware of this but it's raining quite heavily this year. On Tuesday Bangkok experienced rainfall of 138mm per hour; this caused heavy flooding on a number of roads across the capital.

Now, I say you might not be aware of this, because despite the fact a) you can see it, and b) we had some pretty bad flooding last year, so much so that we should have expected similar problems this year, a number of state authorities seem to be oblivious to the problem.

Therefore, I think it's safe to say that if the people whose job it is to combat heavy flooding across the city were caught unawares, then the average Somchai on the street must still be in shock.

Two points, firstly " concrete drainage pipes (the ones used by residents to provide running water to their homes)" some confusion here, drainage pipes are the ones taking water from a house. In many countries they may share a common sewer network with street drains, as I believe they do here, definitely so in my village.
The second point, based on personal observation, is that when local authorities clean roads, the usual method it to used high powered water jets to flush everything down the drains. After last years floods the roads were littered with not just normal rubbish but also a vast amount of additional debris from up-flood regions, plus sand and gravel from broken sandbags and earth embankments. With all this detritus deposited in the sewers one should be grateful that they drain any water at all.
This year's flooding is the result of the cleanup from last year's flooding!

Wont it be interesting to know how's the writer's neighbor, the ex PM from the Dem party, is coping with this latest flooding? And is he going to nominate the same guy as a Governor of the BMA after all these?
