Veera right about rice

Re: ''Lotus leaves will not cover up rice problem'', Opinion, Oct 8.

Veera Prateepchaikul was spot-on in questioning the Commerce Ministry as to why the amount of the second crop of rice for the 2011-12 season, pledged by the government, has ballooned to 10.6 million tonnes, as compared to 6.9 million tonnes for the earlier main crop. Normally, the harvest of the main season of rice crop is much higher than that from the second season.

It is almost certain that the carelessness of the Yingluck Shinawatra government, and rampant corruption among government politicians, may have allowed rice from neighboring countries _ including Vietnam _ to be included in this programme.

    @Dao, d2.

    In general I agree with you. But it seems farmers in Thailand have figured a way to beat the system. First they get a credit card suggested and guaranteed by the government, then they spend all the money on it, then they complain to the government that they are too indebted, then the government offers dept restructuring, which eventually means the government will foot the bill, as they want the farmers vote, and then the government pays an additional "bonus" at election day.

    People who go into debt with credit cards seem to think it makes them part of some high society club when in fact it is the credit card company who is making all the money .Theres a reason they offer you as much credit as you can possibly handle .Debt will control you .

    Rice prices on the global rice market are dropping slightly again as more rice becomes available internationally. India's next crop is going to be very large, so prices won't increase. Perhaps Thaksin thinks he can manipulate the world like he can manipulate Thailand. I hope that his ego is not that big. Thaksin has clearly blundered, but his people are not known for being accurate with the truth. I expect that he will try to keep covering the elephant with lotus leaves while causing smoke and mirror distractions with attacks on the Opposition. This is his usual strategy. Perhaps he will even restart the whitewashing campaign soon to create more distractions.
