An open letter to backers of media regulation

As media consumers we must be aware! The mainstream media has begun transformation; they are now entering into new digital platforms and satellite television.

The repercussions of this development could prove to be horrendous. It is highly possible that content providers will start to deliver messages of evil to the public, causing wide spread panic and possibly even death.

Earlier this week the president of the Thailand Development Research Institute, Somkiat Tangkijvanich, said that because of recent developments such as the internet, media outlets could be left vulnerable to outside interference.

It is attitudes like this that are keeping Thailand far below 'third world' status. Unbelievable!

I used the word Orwellian with a purpose as it is a case of thought corrupts language then language can also corrupt thought. Maybe gist was the wrong word. Sorry but I didn’t fall for it.

Pete, I believe that you should be able to smell the sarcasm in the article from a mile away.

I wanted to ask how long before someone completely missing the gist of the article comments. Beaten ....

I'm really not sure if Khun Arglit is being sarcastic or rather tongue in cheek when he quotes...

Without doubt this is what will happen. Those with a political agenda will take control of the airwaves and the public will become brainwashed by their messages, unable to think for themselves or even change the channel.
Can you imagine what kind of country we would be living in if the government or even the army had their own television channels that they controlled with an iron fist and that were available on television sets 24 hours a day?

I thought watching Channel 5 or 9 this is happening, has happened and will continue to happen in the future. I would say some Thai terrestrial TV channels have been happily brainwashing the masses for years and probably years to come. You only have to tune into one of the Thai Tv channels to see the sort of daily dribble and one dimensional programming and reporting being aired to the masses who acually can't afford to have cable or satellite.

I’m not too sure I get the gist of Arglit’s article: it’s too Orwellian to be of any real significance, after all television sets do have an on/off switch, Much more to the point would be censorship of the media where Thailand ranks 137th out of 179 countries in the 2011-2012 press freedom index, not good for a so-called democratic country. Improve upon that and there is no need to worry about other backers of media regulation, the country already has far too many.
