Postbag: Thaksin can stop a coup

Re: "Talking about coup d'etats," (Editorial, Oct 25).

No Thai in his/her right mind would want to see another coup happen.

But there is no democracy going on in Thailand. Hence, it would not make any difference at present whether a coup happens or not: Because we are stuck.

You're absolutely right that the clock is ticking and Thais remain impervious too it.

I can only imagine the street protests after 2015 when the Thais suddenly wake up to find their country full of ASEAN workers who have taken their jobs because they are better educated and trained and can speak English.

The 2006 coup was specifically forbidden by the constitution in force at the time. Nothing that Thaksin did or did not do could cause or justify such an illegal act.

You don't have to be a 'red fan' to believe that, you only need to be a democrat.

Government is for the people and care of the country .Thaksin is for himself .There is the problem .He uses the governemnt as a tool to service himself at the expense of the people and the country .Very warped indeed .

Well put Vint, and could all the Red fans here please note that Thaksin could have prevented the previous coup if he had been less arrogant in early 2006 and accepted with a bit of humility that he had gone a little too far and ought to have taken a reality check. Thing is, all that time sitting in Dubai to reflect on this has sadly been wasted, all the signs are there that he fully intends to take us to the brink of another coup.

Bureacracy, particularly in Thailand, can be a breeze or it can be a nightmare. Too bad they don't know how to smooth over the rough patches. Either they want to keep bureaucracy problematic (because it keeps more people employed pushing papers?) or they just plain can't think of ways to fix it.

Thaksin coup prevent a coup, but his record makes people think that he is only thinking about 3 things: 1) Money 2) Power 3) Shinawatra clan controlling Thailand for decades. At whatever cost. But all similar-thinking people never last long nowadays, and they all seem to spend their later years in the court system or jail. He has a brilliant business mind, and it is such a shame that he won't use it for the true benefit of all Thais and the whole nation. This may be the kind part of what he is remembered for.
