Train of thoughtlessness

I still recall how I felt when travelling by BTS SkyTrain to work for the first time. I was happy and excited. It wouldn't be an exaggeration to say that other Bangkokians must have felt the same way.

Five years after the operation of the skytrain began, we were again delighted when another mass rapid transit system, the Bangkok Metro subway, or MRT, became available.

We were finally up to par with other Asian countries.

There is a very simple way to stop people who talk loudly on trains. Stand in front of them and stare. You don't even have to say anything and they eventually get the message as you 'invade their privacy'. Or laugh at what they say. That always works. As for standing to one side on an escalator, that has little to do with courtesy but simple common sense, something almost non-existent in Thai society.

I'm not in favour of Phibunsongkram-esque etiquette education because its the parents duty to teach a kid manners, not the state.
