Safety first, then power to the pedallers

Can Bangkok really become a city of bicycles?

I ask myself this question after spotting two bike-related campaigns in the city this month.

One of them is "A Day Bike Fest 2012", which is taking place this week at the Airport Link's Makkasan station. It will include several activities accommodating both hardcore riders and newcomers.

re discussion 5: and what is to stop the cars and trucks from using these lanes as well?

Maybe they could paint some more bike lanes on the overcrowded sidewalks of Sukumvit Rd? What a joke that was!

Looking at the number of small motorbikes, I would create motorbike lanes and prohibit and fine that crazy zig-zagging through traffic... So, separate cars from motorbikes..

Khun Merlin #1 is absolutely correct. Without the Rules of Law, the bike lanes will become anything but bike lanes, just like our so-called "footpath." Now compare that with the Bicycle Capital of the World, Denmark, where Law & Order prevails every single day of the year, opposite of that in Thailand.

Oh sure. Just take some of that extra road space (because Bangkok has no traffic problems) and dedicate it to bicycles. That's a great idea. What could possibly go wrong?

Why not get all the sidewalks fixed first?

I am sure any bike lanes built will be infested by motor bike riders, telephone boxes, street stalls, beggars, dumped rubbish and parked cars just like all the other "footpaths" around Bangkok!
