US, Asia need stronger cultural ties

When US President Barack Obama arrives back in Washington after his whirlwind trip of Asia, there will be a lot on his desk.

Persistently high unemployment, negotiations to avert the US economy's going over a "fiscal cliff", and the continuing investigations surrounding the killing of US ambassador to Libya Christopher Stevens all await him.

Somewhat lost in the ongoing media coverage of the investigation _ further complicated by the recent resignation of CIA director David Petraeus _ into the deaths of Stevens and three American colleagues killed in Benghazi, Libya, on the 11th anniversary of the Sept 11 terrorist attacks is one of the reasons why the top diplomat was in that city that night.
