How to tell if you're still a farang

As a Thai who has spent some time abroad I consider myself able to evaluate whether a farang, (I use this term endearingly) has been properly assimilated into Thai society.

So I thought it might be useful to my many farang friends and readers to devise a simple test to help guide farang who may be wondering whether they have indeed successfully made the seamless transition into becoming a Thai.

Here is my simple test.

Oh, there's nothing "endearing" about the word farang. It's roots are deragatory and it's use is out of convenience. "Kohn tang chat" would be endearing.. if that were the authors intent.

You are a Farang because you've been mistaken for a Frenchman/woman since way back when.

You are a farang forever in Thailand whether you've been staying in Thailand for more than five decades or was born in here in Thailand and yet still doesn't know how to read or write English, French, German or any other languages except Thai because you are an albino. Seeing you for the first time people will greet you as khun farang...have no doubt.

You're a farang if you pay taxes

You are still a farang as long as you hate these idiot soap operas on TV

You are still a farang if you cannot open a tightly bound bag of noodle soup without scolding yourself!

You are no longer a farang when you can ride a motorcycle with your complete family and the dog!

If the saduak (convenient) and mai pen rai attitude is the prerequisite of being Thai then look at today's article. "Thailand's education system scores badly, ranking 37th out of 40 countries", and understand there is nothing to be chased after or proud to be of being a Thai (in the writers sense). This is a very simplistic personal view of someone and is basically good for a laugh only. After 4 decades here I will come in time, it's respect for others, and the lack of that respect is now being advertised as being assimilated?

You are still a farang (and an old fashioned one) if you think the wife should bring in a dowry.

You live too long in Thailand if you are not aware they have the dirtiest beaches in the world.
