Turn down the volume

Recently, legislation passed in the United States requires television stations to tone down the volume of commercials to the same decibel level as regular programming.

Americans are finally becoming fed up with the continual noise assaulting them. Is there any hope that such legislation might be enacted in Thailand soon?

And while such noise reduction legislation is being considered, how about considering toning down the continual hysterics, continual shrieking, crying, shouting and violence of some Thai women characters?

One must be daft to watch TV here in TH in the first place. Most Thais love noise for it appears silence makes them think too much and who knows what that will do to them, its like numbing the brain, some use alcohol to attain the same state. Meditation once in a while could be beneficial.

Dear Jack. Switch off. I find the off button very useful against all soaps and commercials. The books I read, even on Kindle, are totally commercial free and silent. Bliss.

I’m sure most farangs who have lived here for a while know Thais love loud noise and never seem to object to the various sources which lead to early deafness of the population such as; the insane loudspeaker advertising vans trolling the streets; the ridiculous whistle blowers in car parks; the incessant noise in shopping malls especially in the kids play areas; the booming pick-up trucks on the roads with bass so loud they vibrates ones car as they pass; the ludicrous sound volume emanating from the huge speakers at temple fetes that can be heard half a kilometer away. Yes, Thais certainly love loud noises.

This is not something that happened in the US recently. It has been law for many, many years.

The first mistake is letting the boob tube into the house in the first place. It's like having a smiling villain living with you who has completely seduced your family and so leaves you powerless to throw him out.

Having just spent time in the US I was reminded that it's not much better there. Much of the stuff my educated family watches there is just as violent and/or insipid as what is seen here.

Luxury tax on the whole is protectionist and stagnates the economy .Over a hundred percent tax for quality foreign made goods makes sure that no one but the richest will ever see them .If the tax was reduced to the normal seven percent the business that would be created and the infrastructure business to support it would far out weight the short sight rip off tax currently being charged .The government should stop being so short sighted .

Aggressive advertising is stupid, and I'm in full agreement with D2.

When the advertisements come on, because the TV channels turn up the volume excessively, I either turn off the sound or change the channel. I doubt if I am the only person doing this. The advertising companies probably think that turning up the volume will increase their sales. I refuse to buy anything advertised as a result of this selling strategy.

    RE turn down the volume.
You could always not watch Thai soaps, request politely that the volume be lowered and if that doesn't work then turn it down yourself, go to another room and read or work on the computer.
If none of the above seems to work pull the power cable for the TV out of the wall and cut the plug off.
For me I usually jast ask my family to turn it down and they do.
