Are you Thai? 11 ways to tell

A few weeks ago I wrote an article for this newspaper titled "How to Tell Whether You're a Farang". I got so many Tweets suggesting that I write a follow-up to even things out that I felt obligated to pen a simple test for those Thais attempting to become farang, and to determine whether they have indeed made that transformation successfully. So here's my simple test, for what it's worth.

• You're Thai if you still can't tell the difference between a heated argument and a free and honest debate. In Thai society, to question the judgement of someone in authority - be that a boss, a teacher or even a father - can be construed as an act tantamount to mutiny. Therefore, it's rather sad that in our culture, a valid statement is determined more by who said it, rather than the merits and reasoning behind what was actually said.

• You're Thai if you're a Sunday driver even on weekdays. Thai motorists are infamous for inventing their own secret traffic code, and all foreigners need to get to to grips with this quickly or else life on the roads will be a nightmare. In any other country, flashing your headlights would signal giving way for the other car to pass. But in Thailand flashing headlights is equivalent to a rattlesnake shaking its tail; it means don't make a move or I'll run you over.

The true test of being Thai is being so arrogant as to believe nothing is ever your fault, nothing is ever Thailand's fault and nothing is ever the Thai people's fault. To be a true Thai, you must be arrogant enough that it is ALWAYS someone else's fault.

"...but i have to say that i am proud not to be Thai." I just am what I am. I had no choice in the country of my birth, and my own country has plenty of faults as do all other countries.

I am extremely happy to have education and state loudly I have absolutely NO desire to be Thai.

The heated debates normally end with someone being seriously hurt, flashing headlights is the most obvious idiotic road signal here, I could go on but it all comes down to Thais have NO moral responsibility's

You’re most certainly Thai if you use the term ‘Superstar’ for a TV soap actress.

I am married for 24 years to a Thai Woman (Not a nightlife girl) and we lived for 8 years in Germany. I work since 15 years in Thailand (For a industrial government organization) but i have to say that i am proud not to be Thai. I am proud that i am well educated, respect the view's of others and that i am not a racist. Thailand is a nice place for retirement but not a good place for the real business.

Given the transformation of your Thai GF because of pasta and cream sauce, you might be interest in the statistic that says that Thai university girls are on average 7 kilos heavier today than they were 15 years ago, due to being introduced to such things as fast food, pizza and pasta.

I know you're a young girl and have been taught a certain way and to only believe that way. But, I would bet that I've met more Thais that you have, even though you're Thai. So, I'd say generally that this article is very accurate.
