Postbag: Sukumpol's real aims

I have no problem with Defence Minister Sukumpol Suwanatat's ordering the retroactive removal of opposition leader Abhisit Vejjajiva as an instructor at an army cadet school. If Mr Abhisit in fact dodged the draft as charged, then he certainly is not worthy to teach our cadets, and must be held accountable.

But I suggest that the defence minister's main job is to defend our country _ not curry favour to keep his post secure.

Gen Sukumpol, you have a multitude of tasks far more important than firing a sub-lieutenant who left the army decades ago, don't you?

@ Eric Bahrt: I've been a vegetarian almost all my life and I've never felt the need to ramble on about it or convert others. If ever the world will turn vegetarian, it will be a very slow, evolutionary process. Why not just relax, sit back and enjoy your larb-tauhoo or paneer shahi korma?

A military clean up and downsizing of the top tier would be welcome .So would scrapping of many of the obvious waste of money projects like the aircraft carrier and blimp .I think Sukumpol is just a baby sitter for the Army and wont rock the boat too hard unless the fugitive thinks he can get away with it .

Excellent letter Khun Burin. Now I see the army has ordered 200 new tanks. For what? Defending a few rai around Preah Vihear, fighting terrorists in the South, or preparing for the next coup. How ridiculous. Tanks are weapons of the last century and even then would have been quite inappropriate for Thailand. More likely they are just more toys for the scores of redundant generals to play with. The same generals who squandered billions on the useless toys identified in Khun Burin’s letter.

An excellent letter by K Burin this morning with all valid points, unfortunately none of which will be addressed by the Defence Minister as he and he General mates continue to rape this country for their own personal gain.

"But perhaps more importantly, a true libertarian would argue that if eating meat is ''a matter of choice'', so is promoting vegetarianism ."

I don't see them writing the BP every day trying to force their views on everybody else though, Eric, and then calling you stupid if you don't agree.
