It's your government, so make it listen

Here we go again, section 112 of the Criminal Code, the lese majeste law. Another citizen, Somyot Prueksakasemsuk, editor of Voice of Taksin, was found guilty on two counts on Wednesday and sent to prison for 11 years.

Immediately, some red-shirts organised protests, even if small ones. Immediately, human rights groups and the various non-Thai bodies, committees and agencies clicked send on their press releases, condemning the judgement.

Immediately, newspaper writers penned their thoughts on the subject, tip-toeing ever so gently -- for no one would want to share a cell with Somyot. Who, me? No way.

I'm sure it's not the actual law that is the problem, but the fact that politicians on both sides of the divide continually use it to cover obscure charges that really have nothing to do with lese-majeste.

Pheu Thai should amend this and other laws, but the moment they try to do so, they will accused of disloyality. I am not defending their failure to act, but that is cruel reality of the situation here. They have chosen not to reform Thai law, and that is a shame (particularly given the campaign they ran), but there is a reason why they are reluctant to make these changes.

Although you ask good questions khun Vorani, if anyone even attemps to amend article 112, the military will be all over him/her like white on rice. PT knows this, that was one of the reasons here was a coup in 2006. PT does not want another one.
