Slain militants' families shouldn't get compensation, says Veera | Bangkok Post: opinion

Caution needed in far South

There is good cause for many of us to feel proud of, and to commend, the marines at a make-shift base in a rubber plantaion in Narathiwat’s Bacho district who fought off the major onslaught by well-armed Islamist insurgents early Wednesday morning.

The marines, under the command of Cdr Thammanoon Wanna, foiled a daring attempt by a force variously estimated at 50 militants to seize the base. They killed 16 of them, their bodies found scattered outside the base perimeter.

Good read. This is one of the most lucid writings from Mr. Veera. I support his valid views and concerns.

One problem is that the military and the government are the worst at giving out reliable information. From news articles I've read, the number of insurgents who attacked seems to vary... from 30 to 50 to 60. It's like a fish story. Although the number of dead militants have decreased from 19 to 17 now 16. And was the intel from an informant or from documents found on the body of a militant killed last Saturday? As for the compensation, I find it hard to believe. If true then there had better be a good reason given.

To put in perspective...if I'd be convicted for murder, my family could claim compensation from the government for not having income anymore...thats what it's all about...just shows politics in Thailand is all about talking time in the media without saying anything sensible

What informants? The tip-off was from a map found on an insurgent a few days ago. I read it right here in the BP.

Could Chalerm be that stupid to the extend of compensating people, who could in the first place killed our lawful people?

Disc 2 - that is a very cheap shot!!!! Surely it is a no-brainer that families of killed insurgents should not be compensated. Hopefully Mr Veera is correct in suggesting Mr Chalerm did not mean what he said or, more likely, his statement was misinterpreted. Anyway, hopefully he will clear the matter up soon. On Mr Veera's other point, he could not be more right. The key to beating these AQ style insurgents is timely and correct intel. Anything that puts it at risk is, to put it mildly, counter-productive. I agree that the security officers should not have disclosed that they had advance warning of the attack.

The redshirt terrorists were paid so why not the southern ones?

Thailand established a network of trust in Isaan villages during the communist insurgency. The understanding and generosity shown to the villages made them impervious to communist infiltration. The general responsible still commands their loyalty to his political advantage today. This did not happen in Vietnam and Laos.

The Southern insurgents are using the same tactics that the communists used. They started by destroying the security of the communities, they took out effective local leadership, they invited harsh Govt. reprisals (Tak Bie etc.), then mobilised the people in war. Only understanding and generosity will establish trust.

It is hard to believe that folks would even consider compensation for those involved in armed insurrection against the government, but then the PTP did just that for the red shirt invasion of Bangkok.

The family of militants or insurgents who died in the incident should not be given any support from the government. So that the innocents would not be missed led by insurgents or militants. The government should advertise more on TV to educate citizens, not to joint any groups of militants or insurgents. By warning the citizens that they will not receive help or support from government if the joint this mentioned groups for their wrong action.
