Postbag: Rats on Sukhumvit

I am a regular visitor to Bangkok but my last visit has made me wonder if Sukhumvit Road is in the middle of a rat plague? I don't recall ever seeing so many rats, and all during the day.

I was walking near Soi 43 one morning and came across about 10 rats feasting on garbage. I spoke to the owner of my hotel and she suggested it was because we were not in the wet season, and many hadn't drowned in the underground tunnels as would usually be the case.

One can argue that the city is run by rats and cockroaches.

Dis#2 - I live in the Bang Na area of Bangkok, and periodically men in 'Ghostbuster' outfits come along and spray white smoke everywhere in an effort to kill whatever it is they're trying to eliminate (mozzies and cockroaches I guess, but maybe rats too). There is never any warning except for the noise, and I wonder if the pesticide is harmful to humans and pets as it gets everywhere.

#Long Time Guest I don't know where you get your misinfo from but it is incorrect. You can get ALL your amino acids from Veg, Nuts, Legumes. Easily !
Whatever 1000s of studies you refer to pls name one up to date credible study. Its just not so. BTW I have friends(age 30-50) who have been vegetarians since birth All healthy. One a former champion gymnast , one runs a thriving yoga studio in Barcelona, others with busy careers... you are perpetuating a myth.(I'm not a vegetarian btw)

Rats: Part of the 'Mai Phen Rai' mentality...It's not my problem. A pity that rats don't spread SARS or the PEST or any other acute lethal disease. That's the only way in getting Thai bureaucrats finally doing something about it...

The city taking a stance against rats and cockroaches is something I havent seen yet .Maybe there should be groups catching mice and cockroaches .

Yes, too much harmful chemicals on food is a serious problem, tho Thais are mostly unaware of it, and gov't is doing nothing about it. There's also widespread MSG problem.
