Postbag: Flush govt's toilet swap

Re: ''Ministry to flush out squat loos, push for public to take a seat'' (BP, Feb 19).

It's not April 1 yet but the jokes are coming early! How can the government be serious about changing squat toilets to ''Western seated style''?

Surely this is just a step up for Thais who regularly use the squat type of toilet? As the footprints regularly seen on Western-style seated toilets show, you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink.

Dis#6 - and a recent survey showed that Spain is also in many ways a far cheaper place to live than Thailand. I go there quite often to visit family and have known this for some time. Thailand is no longer a cheap destination.

bkk-farang If you are booking your holiday from Europe, the price of rooms just went up. The air fares are already high, so more expensive rooms put people off.
Spain is becoming more attractive as it's only 2 hours flight from most of Europe and they have had to cut prices to attract tourists -- something that Thailand would never do.

The Bangkok pavement issue is impossible for politicians to solve. The tesagik and the Police collect money, and this goes to influential people whom the politicians need to help to garner support and votes for them. If Pongsapat were to clear the pavements, then Thaksin stands to lose a lot of votes, and this may weaken his command of the Black Pearl and make the sea of Bangkok dangerous for him to sail in. It's all about t' doubloons me hearties!

@bkkdave #2: And what exactly has the “spiralling baht” to do with air fares for tourists who book and pay their tickets outside of Thailand?

Brian M Corrigan asks: “Could the fact that the rape, along with many other attacks on tourists here, and the numerous deaths caused by tour bus drivers, is deliberately unreported to protect the tourism industry?”
I am sure this is the fact. Some time ago a friend of mine was stabbed multiple times by a robber in the middle of the night in Sukhumvit. Luckily he survived. The police interviewed him and they mentioned that these robberies happen all the time. Till now I did not read about them in any of the English newspapers here…

The tourism industry should be worried by the spiralling baht - soon nobody will consider Thailand for a holiday, what with the air fares
