Next-door poaching

While all these prominent leaders at the Cites conference in Bangkok are pledging protection for endangered species, rhinos are being killed virtually on their doorstep in Laos to the concern of nobody.

I found two rhinoceros horns in a local market between Tha Khek and Pak Se (Road 13) for sale for no more than US$200 (5,900 baht).

I would gladly have paid these poachers their 2 x $200 to let the rhinos live.

Right on Charlie. Half the lanes for private cars, double the lanes for buss so they make terrific progress and then see if people choose buses. In Bangkok, they'll pick cars.

I agree, Jack. Thailand could learn from Kenyan Park Rangers - how to effectively guard its natural heritage. SE Asians in general are remiss in animal and environmental husbandry. In Chiang Rai's Night Bazaar, at least one vendor is openly selling baby elephant tusks.

Disc #1+2 When you consider exactly why it was that Saudi Arabia kicked out its Thai workers -and not the other way around as it stands for Sri Lankan and Indonesian laborers- I think you might infer the answer to your question.

Re Thai workers to Saudi - the government is demonstrating that it hasn't the slightest interest in the welfare of lowly manual workers. Its only interest would be to re-instate trade and tourist numbers.
