Last month, environmentalist Banjong Nasae created a Facebook petition asking billionaire Dhanin Chearavanont and his agro-giant CP to stop buying "trash fish" caught by environmentally destructive trawlers to make animal feed. It attracted more than 30,000 "Likes" and 4,000 "Shares" in a few weeks.
"Fish and other marine life have been scooped up by fine nets used by trawlers to sell to grinded-fish factories and your animal feed company. This has made you rich, but the fishermen are facing bankruptcy," the petition says.
"The depletion of marine life in our waters is now critical. If you still buy trash fish from trawlers, then you play a part in this environmental destruction."
