MY TWO SATANGS
When it comes to technology Thailand is always trying to keep up with the latest innovations. However, just like your "cool" uncle who owns an iPad but doesn't know how to connect to the local Wi-Fi, we always seem a little confused when it comes to applying any new gadgets and services that may pop up.
The latest misguided attempt to bring our country into the 21st century comes in the form of Electronic Monitoring tags for parolees. While I commend what is most likely an attempt to reduce the prison population and save taxpayers from footing the bill of looking after prisoners, I can't help but feel that we may be getting a little ahead of ourselves here.
While EM tags have been credited with cutting repeat offences by up to 12.5% in countries like South Korea it is important to note that these cuts hinge on effective tracking systems and the ability to respond quickly to any breach of parole terms. These are of course two pretty important points. Points that Thailand is just not ready to handle.
