It was almost impossible to avoid the media frenzy during the week over the royal babywatch, otherwise known as ''The Great Kate Wait''. There hadn't been so much excitement among the English press since David Beckham broke his metatarsal, prompting front page photographs of his wretched foot.
Royal ''experts'' flooded the television studios and also offered sage-like advice to newspaper columns, although it soon became apparent they didn't have any more idea what was going on than the average viewer or reader.
Leading English papers carried live blogs, a kind of ball-by-ball coverage - ''hospital door opens ... nurse gazes out of window ... policeman looks bored''.
