The head of an important police unit has shocked state officials and social workers with a strange statement.
Pol Col Napanwut Liamsanguan, who is in charge of the Bangkok Children and Women's Protection Unit, fanned the fires of outrage and stoked age-old prejudices during an interview on prostitution, when he said sex workers are necessary to society. Without them, there would be more sex crimes, he said.
The very idea of a senior police officer holding such views today is astonishing. After decades of careful studies, rewriting of outdated laws and the very founding of the unit he runs, Pol Col Napanwut appeared to know little of the origins, reasons and motivations of the criminals he often is responsible for fighting.
