Put police on trial

Thailand's most experienced forensic pathologist, Khunying Porntip, is a valuable, national asset. The lady has successfully discredited the dubious DNA match police investigators used to accuse the two Myanmar men in the Koh Tao murder case. I hope the judge in this case will rule judiciously, and not bow to political pressure from the UK, the police or even General Prayut. He is, I’m sure a person who would frown on pressure for a guilty verdict to please others.

In the US, this case would have been tossed out of court long ago, the boys freed and the police put on trial instead. The police deserve to face trial for the way they handled the case. On top of their pomposity, boasting and posing for TV cameras in groups wearing tight uniforms — stretched by the strain of a belly bulging from beer and over-eating — they have only hindered justice, not helped it.

Sloppy cops exposed

For an accurate report on the Koh Tao murder case and Thailand’s forensic expert, Khunying Porntip, one should read: http://www.express.co.uk/news/uk/604450/Thai-murders-British-tourists-DNA-Thailand.

The story is not slanted, and it really digs into the Thai police's torture methods used to obtain confessions in the thoroughly sloppy investigation. It’s a wonder police have not tried to censor a website that exposes their inequities and inconsistencies. But then again, I’ve heard many of them cannot read.

It's all for show

I have been watching the parading of the bombing "suspect" to the media with amazement. When these displays are carried out I wonder if there any police or military left to carry out normal duties. But let’s not miss a photo opportunity.

All this parading and posturing has clearly made the same people too busy to respond to the negative DNA results, arising from analyses by foreign laboratories, in the case of the two men arrested, paraded and postured as the Koh Samui killers.

Time to face reality

Re: “A Chang headache”, (PostBag, Sept 12).

Congratulations, Mr Pike. Is this the first time you’ve experienced downsizing? When Canada went from imperial to metric some thirty years ago, packaging was downsized to accommodate metric measurement, but prices either remained the same or went up because of so-called necessary factory equipment conversion costs.

That very same day I received the first speeding ticket of my life, as Canadian vehicles were calibrated for miles, not kilometres. Thirty miles per hour, legal the day before, suddenly became 48.2km, and I was “over the limit”.

With downsizing, it is mostly called inflation. We get less, pay more. There’s no escaping it. And why would you want to drink Chang anyway? The stuff is a thin, hopsy, bitter muck of a beer and — like most Thai beers — cheap with no real quality.

Try a brew product with the name of a tourist destination on Andaman. It’s probably one of the best in Thailand at the moment. As the saying goes, you are what you eat, or drink.

Living without sleaze

Re: "Water sports raids lack depth", (PostBag, Sept 13).

I agree with Rick that police raids in Pattaya are a joke. Everyone has known about the jet ski scams for years. If the police wanted to they could shut down the whole business in 24 hours. Although I don’t rent jet skis, escaping the rampant corruption is one of the reasons I decided to move to Chiang Mai.

The other reason is that Chiang Mai is less pricey than Pattaya. It is also culturally interesting (Pattaya didn't feel like Thailand) and it is a great place for vegetarians.

As for those who have suggested I lived in Pattaya for the sex industry, I’ll admit that many years ago that was true. But at this point in my life I don’t want to live in a place that has nothing else to offer.
