Now that you've dragged me in to this, here's my $0.02
There has always been extreme difference in wealth, that will never change.
There are people who continue to promote class warfare for their own benefits under the guise of altruism while many other are trying to keep the poor pacified to avoid the repeat of the French Revolution. The rest of the people just don't have time to worry about it.
Most 'community activist' I've come across are more interested in riling up the 'underprivileged' to go demand for their 'rightful share' of fish from someone rather than to teach them how to fish and feed themselves.
Minimum Wages aren't supposed to allow people to live comfortably, it's meant to allow people to scrape by while trying to move on to something better.
The only cure for poverty is self-sufficiency and self-improvement.Discussion 25 : 06/02/2012 at 12:15 PM25
Khun Chinagirl #22, Mark Levin is a constitutional law's lawyer with a PhD in Law, and extensive real-life experience in the US Govt. He has authored many NYT's best-selling books, including his newly release, "Ameritopia." And where do you think Milton Friedman missed his mark?

Khun Chinagirl #21, you can disagree with my "moral and economic stance" all you want, but the adversed consequences of (the theory on) minimum wage law will apply just the same to any country stupid enough to implement it, as Milton Friedman explained so clearly in that Youtube clip. It's just the FACT. Why do you think the Economy of the UK continues to be in shamble if the minimum wage law has been working as advertised?

300 Baht increase is not going to make Thailand a welfare state. We seem to disagree on short-term problems instead of focusing on solving these problems for long term good. ASEAN is opening by 2015. Thai manufacturers should consider moving our low cost/low skill workers manufacturing to neighbouring countries and attract higher skill/cost investments. This wage increased should be the process in moving Thailand to a more productive, highly skilled knowledgeable work force and have more of our national brands. This will also be a process in solving low skill illegal foreign workers problems and protecting workers rights. They are many other advantages for Thailand if we can focus in solving short-term problems.

Khun Spiceman #20 Why is an economist recommending a populist radio host as serious reading ? I am familiar with Milton Friedman and know that like most economists he didn't always get it right. He was thought-provoking, but his works should not always be taken so literally. Times and conditions change and so does economic reasoning..... I learnt that from David Begg who was my Professor.
Discussion 21 : 06/02/2012 at 02:43 AM21
Thank you Spiceman for your comment, I hope BP lets me reply. It will not be spiteful or patronising as in your response. I am a student of Professor David Begg and use economic analysis every day in my employment. I get a plethora of advice from economists every day, and guess what, 90% should go straight into my bin. What we need now is common sense, not economists. Especially those that are stuck on send. I disagree with your morale and economic stance on this issue......so what? Of course you agree with Med, but if you read what I said about the socialist government, I did too. Thank you and good night.

Khun Chinagirl #19, I am an economist and I suggest you read a book, "Ameritopia" by Mark Levin. It will open you economic eyes by exposing the fallacy and cruelty of Socialism, and explain why Free Market Capitalistic System is the most humane and fairest way to lift poor people out of poverty. And Khun Med #18 is absolutely correct in describing how Socialism has ruined the UK.
Also, please, watch "Milton Friedman on Minimum Wage" on YouTube. It's a real eyeopener!Discussion 19 : 05/02/2012 at 10:37 PM19
#18 good for you. I am not a Brit (but like them lots) and agree that the last government caused havoc with their economy. But, if you were an economist, you would have to agree that there are signs of green shoots in both the US and UK economy. Long way to go, but I am optimistic. Glad to see you have a social conscience.
Discussion 18 : 05/02/2012 at 05:18 PM18
Chinagirl. I am a brit. I have also said that, i agree with the 300baht minimum wage, and asked if anyone here could live on 300baht a day? I think not. I do belive that it should be more in the region of 500 baht a day not 300. This will and should make people work harder, be proud in what they do, also be loyal to the company/ business. Do not forget also there will be more growth as more people will have more spending power. The UK is in a really big mess, recession, over 1 trillion in debt, increased taxes, no growth, no spending power therefore more unemployment and then more debt. Its a circle now and no way out of it in the UK.
