RASTA D5: It has little at times to do with emotional responses and at other times, emotional responses are more valid than so-called rational ones.
The earth belongs to everyone, as do its resources. Were people allowed to move upon the surface of the earth freely, and were the distribution of the earth's resources for all of humankind, not just those who hoard certain areas, everyone would be better off.
Modern borders are extensions of the caveman's water holes and berry bushes.
Beside that let me point out one obvious, unemotional and undeniable fact:
The first illegal immigrants to Australia were the British!
The first illegal immigrants to "The New World" were the Spanish, Portuguese, French, English and Dutch (among others)Discussion 5 : 21 Sep 2012 at 09.415
Despite all the emotional responses, Australia has the right to choose 'who' enters its shores and becomes a Citizen. Just like the US, Japan, Thailand, Germany, Saudi Arabia, or any other country they will vet the applicants for their suitability. Just arriving and demanding that they be welcome, after burning all their Passports and other documentation, is the act of people trying to short cut and cue jump.

I believe the idea or intention with the initiative is that people jumping on a boat with the purpose of illegally entering Australia with the purpose of seeking asylum in Australia should not have an advantage or get in front of the queue of asylum seekers hat follow the traditional channels of seeking asylum. Australia and other countries should have the right to accept or reject asylum seekers according to it's laws and regulations and the same should be true for other countries as well. If at all possible people in need should be help at their origin. So yes I agree with the australian initiative.

Greed and the legal professionals, many think they are entwined, don't help solve the problem. Lawyers can make any migrant into a special case or frustrate the process through time wasting. They know that using "human rights" often without justification, can win an appeal, or that certain claims can not be investigated or challenged. I have every sympathy for any country trying to cope with masses of unwanted migrants, however, the real victims are the genuine asylum seekers.

Sorry Kenny #1, the problem is exactly that some of these people are genuine asylum seekers who have and had horrible problems in their home countries.
I understand that Australia and many other countries don’t want to feed and take care of anybody who thinks it is better outside of their home country. But what should be done with the people who are abused in their home countries maybe because they criticize the government. Should we care about them or should our advice to them be: just shut up?Discussion 1 : 19 Sep 2012 at 08.341
These people are not asylum seekers, they gained asylum when they successfully crossed the border out of their own country. They are mostly economic refugee's they pay a lot of money in air fare's and to the people smugglers to bypass the normal channels into Australia. I think they should be treated as what they are, illegal entrants and deported back whence they came, they are not Australia's responsibility.
