    Khun RazarisBK #17, (for whatever it is worth), don't you know that prostitution is ILLEGAL in Thailand?

  • Discussion 17 : 24 Sep 2012 at 11.4317

    Forgive me for being ignorant, but what exactly is Thailand's "sin tax"? and does it include taxing prostitutes?

    Khun Ravbrat #15, my point is that for people who choose to drink alcohol or smoke cigarette excessively, their addiction only affects the country's wellbeing indirectly and limitedly. For crooked politicians, who made up a vast majority of Thai politicians, however, their addiction to corruptions affect the wellbeing of the country directly and without limits, and is the rooted cause of all the problems that have been plaguing the country forever. Things like poverty, prostitution, murders, theft, pollution, and etc, all have root in corruptions. Therefore, I can careless for people who choose to drink and smoke, as long as, they know what they're doing and accepting the responsibility for their actions. At the end, each and everyone of us must learn to take responsibility for our actions. Should we be focusing our attention on crooked politicians' heavy addiction to stealing our tax money, instead?

    Spiceman D-14, Addiction is a choice, no matter if it is chocolate, money or heroin. It may not be easy to quit but it can be done "if" the person chooses to. For an addict of anything to say say they can't stop just means they have no (real) desire to quit, they can claim to be 'victims' and blame someone else for their own problems.

    Khun Ravbrat #13, we all know that Thai politicians are heavily addicted to corruption (stealing taxpayers' money), and do you think they have a choice quit doing that too? At least, people who drink or smoke, didn't steal from taxpayers, did they? So, why should we care what they want to do with their own money? However, I agree with you that education is the key to let people know the consequence of their choices. I can only wish that we can do the same with our crook-to-the-bones politicians.

    Disc 11, People addicted to booze or cigs in fact do have a choice. A choice to continue or a choice to quit. Problem is that they choose to continue and then choose to believe they are 'victims' and don't have a choice - - - and they have a right to do just that.

    I choose not to smoke and I rarely drink but I do not want (any) government to restrict my ability to choose to drink if I want to. Raising taxes and calling it healthy is just another fraud perpetrated on people without common sense. Government is not the answer - education is.!

    @ Discussion 11 Makes sense, those addicted really do not have choice.

  • Discussion 11 : 23 Sep 2012 at 02.4311

    Economists have discovered for a long time that demand for booze and cigarette is pretty inelastic, which always makes them excellent targets for the Govt for raising tax revenue. The only thing that is more inelastic than them is gasoline. So, it it is always a lame excuse for any Govts to claim to raise sin tax in order to improve public health.

    @casuist D8,

    The BP didn't say 'desperate', they're quoting critics. And if you're looking for credibility, the current government is not the right place to look for it. You're cold.

    Anytime you take away booze and cigs you are helping someone out healthwise no matter what your intent.
