Kobsak, Korn convinced economic measures work

Deputy Prime Minister overseeing economy Kobsak Sabhavasu on Thursday insisted the government was not just giving out money to people after its economic stimulus measures were heavily criticised by many sides.

At the Post Forum 2009 organised by the Bangkok Post, Post Today and Business Radio FM 98, Mr Kobsak delivered a speech on the government's economic stimulus measures.

He said the government of Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva was not scattering money all over as many academics criticised, but the government must try to slow down the global economic impact and prevent the local economy from collapsing by carrying out measures to raise confidence in investment and financial sectors.

Finance Minister Korn Chatikavanij also gave a speech on 'Financial Policy during Recession' at the Post Forum 2009, saying the government has set this year's economic growth target at two per cent.

"I am confident that our stimulus measures, ranging from the mid-year budget to other tax measures, will boost the gross domestic product (GDP) growth by at least one point and 2009 growth should be two per cent," he told a seminar.

He said the budget allocated by the government should maintain the unemployment rate to be around two to 2.5 per cent, and the economic measures will also be carried out continuously in 2010.

Mr Korn said the government has a plan to borrow 620 billion baht from abroad to stimulate the country's economy, and believed the government will have 90 billion baht left in its balance.
