Career on hold

For many Thais, this story, not the battle over 3G or the fate of the government, is the story they are paying most attention to. The story below makes it clear why.

‘Film’ faces closing credits amid scandal

One of Thailand’s most cherished superstars is falling, write Prapasri Vasuhirun, Onsiri Pravattiyagul and Arusa Pisuthipan

A superstar. A secret love affair. A tearful confession concerning a baby born out of wedlock.

The paternity wrangle between well-known actor and singer Rattapoom ‘‘Film’’ Tokongsub and Thai-Swiss actress Rungnapa ‘‘Annie’’ Brook has reached a point where Rattapoom’s label, RS Plc, put the brakes on all of the superstar’s projects yesterday.

These include his new album Face to Face, the Bangkok Kung Fu film project and his attendance at the Asian Song Festival being held soon in South Korea.

RS has put Rattapoom’s career on hold until he ‘‘takes responsibility’’.

RS’s CEO Surachai Chetchotisak told a news conference yesterday that the ban would end only when Rattapoom went for a DNA test to confirm if the baby is his. If the baby is his, Mr Surachai said, he must take responsibility as the baby’s biological father.

‘‘This is a personal issue for the artist but RS, as the artist’s supervisor and employer, has to take responsibility for this matter as well,’’ Mr Surachai said.

The scandal broke after Rattapoom held a news conference last Thursday at which he admitted he was seeing Rungnapa but would only accept paternity of her three-month-old baby if a DNA test confirmed a link.

A day later, in a tearful speech on public TV, Rungnapa said she would rather not have her child take the test because she did not want Rattapoom to have to take responsibility because of social pressure.

‘‘I accept the fact that I will probably have to raise the child alone,’’ she said.

The Rattapoom-Rungnapa scandal is not the first case of a superstar’s private life being exposed in such a public manner.

Pattamaporn Nartsawee, manager of the band Thaitanium, who worked at RS for seven years and at Sony Thailand, the label with which Rungnapa released a failed album, said there have been many incidents like this in the industry but none of the actors involved were as famous as Rattapoom.

‘‘For artists at this superstar level, my suggestion is to leave your status behind because it will not last forever and rethink your life as a person,’’ she said.

Ms Pattamaporn, who also took care of Tata Young, believes no one should be blamed in this case as it is a personal matter.

‘‘From a PR point of view, I understand why they do what they have to do, but by trying to maintain the organisation’s reputation, you can sometimes lose touch with reality.

Rattapoom is one of RS’s biggest stars. The company has to protect its ‘‘product’’, but one must remember that he is also a person.

‘‘I think he can go on working because he should be appreciated for his body of work instead of his personal life,’’ Ms Pattamaporn said.

Pimonrath Yodmuang, a PR officer at Spicy Disc who used to work for GMM Grammy and counts such big-name artists as Dome Pakorn Lam and Tik Shiro among the entertainers she manages, thinks RS has done a good job in its handling of this matter.

‘‘The artist must be responsible for his actions,’’ she said.

‘‘He is [the company’s] biggest name right now.
