Car blast injures 18, rocks Yala
Eighteen people have been injured in a powerful car blast that shook the business centre of Yala municipality and set off a large fire that caused an estimated 10million baht in damage.
Police say the attack yesterday morning by suspected insurgents was designed to do still more damage – one bomb of four, disguised in a pickup truck and left in the business centre, failed to go off.
Three of the injured were non-commissioned soldiers and the others, civilians. They were taken to nearby Yala Hospital and seven had yet to be discharged last night.
Two containers of oil were packed in with the bombs and intended to act as an incendiary.
The oil ignited in the blast, setting alight a row of shophouses.
The fire gutted 12 wooden shophouses, with initial damage put at 10 million baht. Ten motorcycles and two pickup trucks were also damaged.

Police say the bombs were disguised in an Isuzu pickup truck parked in front of Hen Bakery on Na Nakhon Road in Yala about 7.30am.
The bombs were detonated about 9.50am as soldiers riding in a pickup truck were passing by.
Pol Col Phumphet Pipatphetphum, deputy chief of Yala police, said he was shocked that the attackers had placed at least two containers of oil on the truck, next to four small gas cylinders stuffed with explosives.
One of the cylinders containing the explosives failed to go off.
When the bombs detonated, they set the oil aflame, which spread to the shophouses.
The deputy chief said the culprits had managed to hurt passing soldiers and members of the public, and damage a local landmark, with a single bomb attack.
"The culprits attempted to destroy a commercial landmark in Yala [the shophouses]," Pol Col Phumphet said.
"They used oil to magnify the power of the attack and left the truck in a spot containing many old houses, which they knew would ignite easily."
Fire-fighters battled for more than three hours to put out the flames.
