Unable to be a real policeman Panuthit Isarowutkul, 38, did the next best thing.
He got himself a collection of police uniforms, radios, a police helmet and a fake police ID and pretended to be policeman – many times he said.
Impersonating a police officer is against the law, of course, and eventually Mr Panuthit was caught, but not until he allegedly earned quite a bit of money from his ruse.
In his latest masquerade, he allegedly told his victims he was the deputy superintendent of Phlap phla Chai 1 Police Station, using his status to extort or borrow money and cars.
He allegedly never paid back the money and he sold the cars.
On Monday, his scam came to an end. Mr Panuthit, a native Si Sa Ket, was arrested after police allegedly caught him using a police radio illegally.
Police said they found out he had sold four cars. They are now investigating whether he had any accomplices.
The suspect allegedly confessed to dreaming of becoming a police officer and pretending to be one many times in the past.
Mr Panuthit allegedly admitted to selling cars to friends with criminal records around the Phlapphla Chai area.
One of the alleged victims, who asked not to be identified, was a garage owner who said he loaned Mr Panuthit 130,000 baht and allowed him to use one of his cars.
