The doctor held hostage and wounded in Thursday's shooting rampage has spoken of her ordeal as police opened fire.
Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva visits Dr Pipatra Sailohit, who was shot while being held hostage by Thada Inthamas, at Rajavithi Hospital.
Doctor suspects she was shot by police
The doctor held hostage in Thursday's shooting rampage has spoken of her ordeal, suggesting police were to blame for the four bullet wounds she suffered while at the hands of her kidnapper.
Pipatra Sailohit says she was fully aware of what was happening around her when gunman Thada Inthamas grabbed her and took her car near the Si Ayutthaya intersection.
With Dr Pipatra in the passenger seat, he drove the Toyota Camry to Phaya Thai Road near Victory Monument, where police were able to stop the vehicle. They shot at the car until Thada was dead.
Dr Pipatra, who is in stable condition in Rajavithi Hospital after undergoing surgery, said the ordeal was terrifying.
After taking over the car, Thada pistol-whipped her twice in the head.
He drove while pointing the gun at her. She cowered in her seat.
She said the gunman appeared disoriented and did not know his way.
She curled up in her seat when police started firing at the car.
Dr Pipatra said she felt a sharp pain in her arms, stomach and back and that was when she realised she had been shot.
She said her condition has improved after doctors removed a bullet from her stomach.
The other bullets have not been taken out because they are not life threatening.
Thada, a computer repairman from Nakhon Si Thammarat, had earlier taken another car, stabbed a policeman, and killed a taxi driver.
Dr Pipatra said from her hospital bed that the gunshots that injured her must have come from outside the car, since Thada was pointing his gun at her head the whole time.
Police spokesman Prawut Thavornsiri yesterday admitted Dr Pipatra may have been injured by police fire.
It was possible some of the bullets fired by police injured the doctor, as some of the officers did not know the doctor was inside the car.
An internal inquiry was launched yesterday into the police's handling of the hostage situation. It is headed by Metropolitan Police Bureau deputy commissioner Amnuay Nimmano.
The doctor's mother, Luckana Sailohit, earlier complained that the police had fired at the car without consideration for her daughter's safety. However, she said yesterday she held no grudges against the police, believing they had done their best under the circumstances.
The police spokesman said even though the doctor's family said they would not file legal action against the police, an investigation was in order as police had killed Thada. The inquiry would establish whether police had over-reacted. Some police fired at the tyres to stop the car rather than setting out to shoot the gunman, he said.
Pol Maj Gen Prawut said the saga showed changes are needed to police hostage rescue procedures. He added the police in different jurisdictions must coordinate better.
