The numbers are good
At the Thai-Japanese stadium yesterday, political party leaders were at their creative best in explaining why the numbers they drew for the July 3 ballot paper would benefit their campaigns.
Phue Thai’s Yingluck Shinawatra was obviously delighted that her party was given number one. “It’s easy to remember and also lucky,” she said.
But what about the number 21 drawn by the Chartthaipattana Party?
It’s a great number said party leader Chumpol Silpa-archa, pointing out his elder brother Banharn was the country's 21st prime minister.
"I'm happy with the number and I hope the party will win 35 seats again," he said.
Did you know that the number 2 symbolises victory?
That’s the theory put forward by Chart Pattana Puea Pandin (CPPP) Party leader Wannarat Charnnukul after his party drew that number.
Even number 26 has its good points, says Matubhum Party leader Sonthi Boonyaratkalin. He said the number indicated his party might win 26 seats in the election.
Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva holds up all of his fingers and thumbs to signal 10, the election number the party has received. PATTANAPONG HIRUNARD
By contrast, Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva seemed a little disappointed with his Democrat party’s number 10. He admitted he would have preferred a single-digit number.
Finance Minister Korn Chatikavanij was more upbeat, however. He said he felt good that his party drew No.10 because traditionally a football striker wore the No.10 shirt while those wearing the No.1 were just the goalkeeper and not as important.
Only Bhumjaithai Party members seemed genuinely unhappy, apparently unable to come up with a reason why the number 16 might be auspicious.
