Breaking News with Khun Pop
Today we had a chance to talk to Khun Pop (Praphorn Praphornkul), the breaking news specialist at the Bangkok Post. We had an interesting chat with him about what he does, and how he ended up in this company. Remarkably, he became a leading journalist in only three years time.
Jessy: What exactly do you do in the breaking news section?
Pop: The main purpose of my job is to provide the news and facts about events that happen in this country as fast as possible to the readers, especially the English and international readers. My news section covers politics, social issues, and economics.
Sam: What is the most interesting story that you have covered for breaking news?
Pop: The most interesting thing that I’ve covered was probably the red shirt riots, which included the multi-coloured shirt rallies, and the red shirts organizing the blood sacrifice ceremony. Also, it has been interesting covering the signs with the animals on them that the yellow shirts have put up during this election campaign.

Jessy: Have you made any mistakes while covering a story?
Pop: Of course, our team has made some mistakes – with numbers, for example. Since we cover breaking news, one of our main problems is speed, how fast we can get the news out. Sometimes you get the facts but the facts are not confirmed yet, but we might try to put the story up first, before our competitors. Consequently, sometimes the figures are wrong, but we do make corrections later.
Sam: How long have you been at the Bangkok Post?
Pop: About three and half years. I worked at channel 11, and at a radio station, Radio Thailand, and before that I worked for Thai Airways.
Sam: What inspired you to become a journalist?
Pop: Well, the job is to get the facts out to the people, and one of my main jobs is to let the people know what is going on in this country. The Thai people know what’s going on, but it’s the foreigners who don’t.
Jessy: What is the most challenging thing of all?
Pop: Speed and accuracy, mostly to get things done on time and for the story to be accurate.
Sam: What would you say would be your favorite part of your job?
Pop: The challenge itself. You have to be alert and focused because sometimes additional things happen and if you put the stories out, they would not be breaking news anymore.
Sam: How long does it usually take you to finish a story?
Pop: It depends on the news, and the details of the news itself. Sometimes, you get short news, and it takes about half an hour to wait for the facts. Sometimes there are interviews and you have to wait longer. On average though, to do a regular news story, it takes about 10 to 15 minutes. But if the story is about something like the economy, I might use some specific terms so it might take somewhere from 20 to30 minutes.
