Jets score with 1.9sec left to clinch title

The Din Daeng Jets finally put the ghosts of failed championship bids to bed by defeating their arch-rivals the Klong Toey Whalers with less than two seconds left to win the D'Pelican Fall Classic Hockey League at the weekend.

The Jets entered the Thai World Hockey League in 2004 and despite having some of the best players in the country, they had not been able to win a championship.

The Whalers' top line of Charlie Argue, Devin Keer and Stephen Sproule staked Klong Toey to an early three goal lead as they each scored a goal.

But Din Daeng clawed back with markers from Michael White, Brett Fillmore and John Schachnovsky.

Then with regulation time about to expire Thor Chetsuwan, the Thai Wayne Gretzky, steered a pass from Schachnovsky past Whaler 'keeper Lance Parker as Klong Toey stared in disbelief and the Din Daeng supporters erupted in euphoric frenzy.

Seconds before, Klong Toey had almost won the game at the other end of the ice, but Jets 'keeper Dream Angkulpattanasuk turned away a flurry of Klong Toey shots.

In the consolation final, the Sukhumvit Stars beat the Ratchada Coyotes 7-1. David Blomquist led the Stars with three goals and two assists, and Jouni Heinonen added two goals and an assist for Sukhumvit.
