Liverpool advanced to the fifth round of the FA Cup on Saturday by defeating Manchester United 2-1 at Anfield.
In an earlier match, Chelsea booked their place in the last 16 of the FA Cup after a controversial penalty defeated west London rivals Queens Park Rangers 1-0 at Loftus Road.
Dirk Kuyt scored a late winner to guide Liverpool to the win over their bitter rivals.
The substitute lashed the ball past David De Gea in the 88th minute to complete a memorable week for Liverpool, three days after they reached the Carling Cup final with an aggregate win over Manchester City.
Daniel Agger headed Liverpool in front on 21 minutes after a De Gea mistake, before Park Ji-Sung restored parity with a crisp finish six minutes before half-time.
Kuyt settled an even game after he escaped the attentions of Patrice Evra, ran onto an Andy Carroll flick-on, and found the bottom of the United net to send manager Kenny Dalglish into raptures.
Evra was booed throughout due to his involvement in the Luis Suarez case that opened a deep rift between the two clubs.
Suarez, who received an eight-match ban after an independent FA commission found him guilty of racially abusing the Frenchman, watched on from the stands with his family and celebrated the winning goal wildly.
Evra received predictably vociferous jeers whenever he touched the ball, but thankfully the hostility did not spill over into anything more than verbals.
It was unfortunate that he should end up committing a vital error, though he is joined in the United dog house by De Gea who had a miserable afternoon.
In London, the first meeting of the two sides since the stormy clash which led to Chelsea captain John Terry being accused of racially abusing Anton Ferdinand never lived up to the pre-match hype.
Rangers defender Ferdinand was spared the awkward dilemma of whether or not to shake Terry's hand in the pre-match build-up after the FA ruled there would be no handshake shortly before kick-off.
A disappointing fourth round tie was settled on 62 minutes when Chelsea midfielder Juan Mata sent Paddy Kenny the wrong way from the penalty spot.
However Rangers were seething at referee Mike Dean's decision to award a penalty, the official ruling that Clint Hill had fouled Daniel Sturridge as the two players came together in the box.
Television replays later suggested Hill had made only the slightest contact with Sturridge, but Dean remained unmoved by QPR protests and Mata stepped up to coolly stroke home the winner.
