Evening update

Top Bangkok city officials have met with representative of the drainage and sewerage department and the MRT underground system to try to determine the cause of last night road collapse on Rama IV road.

While no conclusive cause has been found, BMA deputy governor Teerachon Manomai  says interest is centred on a large 3.5 metre drainage pipe, but it may take underground cameras to find out if it has been leaking. Like the road above it, it is quite old – almost 40 years, so it would not be surprising if there are problems.

Meanwhile, the Bangkok governor has ordered a close inspection of other roads in the area, especially Rama 3 and Sathorn. Ultra-sound tests will be carried out to determine if there are any hidden cavities like the one uncovered on by the collapse on Rama IV.

Hole in busy Bangkok road

Traffic in the Thai-Belgium Bridge area near Lumpini park was disrupted Sunday evening when a large hole  was found in the middle of Bangkok's busy Rama IV Road.

The crater was five metres wide and one-metre deep , forcing motorists to avoid one lane of the busy road and leading to traffic congestion.

Thung Maha Mek police immediately notified the Bangkok Metropolitan Authority (BMA) and urged motorists to avoid that section of Rama IV.

BMA authorities quickly brought in equipment to repair the road and early reports this morning indicate that the road is now open to normal traffic.

City officials say they will try to determine the cause of the road collapse today.

It was fortunate the collapse occurred on the quietest night of the week, rather than on a weekday.
