12.4 million people hit by drought

A total of 12,409,544 people in 37,240 villages of 51 provinces are now being affected by water shortages because of the continuing severe dry season, the Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department reported on Tuesday.

Wibul Sanguanpong, the department’s director general, said in a statement that about 729,876 rai of farmland was damaged by drought.

The provinces most severely hit are: Kalasin, Loei, Mukdahan, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Sukhothai, Phrae, Udon Thani, Nakhon Phanom, Nan, Mae Hong Son, Buri Ram, Yasothon, Khon Kaen, Nong Bua Lam Phu, Bueng Khan, Lamphun, Surin, Phayao, Uthai Thani, Ubon Ratchathani, Tak, Sakon Nakhon, Chaiyaphum, Amnatcharoen, Chiang Rai, Uttaradit, Chanthaburi, Lampang, Kampaengphet, Nong Khai, Phitsanulok and Si Sa Ket.

Less severely affected are the provinces of Nakhon Ratchasima, Petchburi, Petchabun, Maha Sarakham, Trat, Ratchaburi, Kanchanaburi, Chiang Mai, Prachinburi, Chachoengsao, Sa Kaeo, Nakhon Sawan, Chainat, Suphanburi, Nakhon Nayok, Chonburi, Saraburi and Phuket, Mr Wibul said.
