Damapong, Areepong appointed to THAI audit panel

Thai Airways International (THAI)has appointed national police chief Priewpan Damapong and finance permanent secretary Areepong Areepong Bhoocha-oom as vice chairman of the company's audit committee.

THAI reported to the Stock Exchange of Thailand that the board of directors' meeting on Monday, May 21, had resolved to terminate the employment contract between the company and THAI president Piyavasti Amranand, effective from June 21 this year.

The bourse had been notified that the company had appointed Chokchai Panyayong, executive vice president for strategies and business development, as acting president, effective from May 21.

The country's national flag carrier also reported the appointment of three members to its audit committee, effective from April 25, 2012 -- chairman Chulasingh Vasantasingh and committee members Weerawong Chittmittrapap and Chutinant Bhirom Bhakdi.

Pol Gen Priewpan, brother-in-law of fugitive former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, and Mr Areepong were also appointed as vice chairmen of the audit committee, effective from May 21.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra instructed the THAI board, along with Transport Minister Jarupong Ruangsuwan,  to clarify the issue of Mr Piyasvasti's dismissal issue with the THAI workers union.

"The government is not be able to clarify the issue because the THAI board made the decision," Ms Yingluck said. "The decision was unanimous and we must respect it."

Mr Jarupong will act as a mediator to ensure fairness and impartiality, she said.

"There might be some misunderstanding, so I ask all sides to talk and I believe all Thai people have good intentions towards their organisation and the country," the prime minister said.

The board on Monday voted by a majority of 12 to one to terminate Mr Piyavasti's contract, according to all previous reports.  It was not "unanimous"..
