Breast painting cost Channel 3 500,000 baht

In the end, the breast painting controversy is going to cost Channel 3 500,000 baht, not a problem for a company that earns billions of baht a year.

Government regulators said the fine was small because the TV channel had admitted it had made a mistake in airing a segment on its popular Thailand's Got Talent show  featuring a topless woman artist who used her bare breasts instead of paint brushes.

Yesterday, Gen Peerapong Manakit, chairman of the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission's (NBTC) sub-committee which was looking into the controversy, said the TV channel was found to have violated Section 37 of the Radio and Television Broadcasting Act 2008.

As a result, the TV channel is required to pay a fine of 500,000 baht for allowing "inappropriate content" in Thailand's Got Talent, the show which aired the nudity, said Gen Peerapong.

He was speaking after talks yesterday with Pravit Maleenont, the managing director of BEC World Plc – the operator of TV Channel 3 – and Panya Nirunkul, president of Workpoint Entertainment Plc, which produces the show.

Both the broadcaster and the content producer conceded that they both made mistakes in allowing the show to be aired and expressed their regrets, said Gen Peerapong.

Earlier Mr Panya denied paying the female contestant.

He dismissed a report that his company hired the contestant to put on the performance.

He said the woman was approached by the show's agents, just like other competitors.

A Thai Rath online report Tuesday quoted a friend of breast-painting contestant Duangjai Jansaunoi, 23, as saying Ms Duangjai was paid 10,000 baht by staff of the weekly Channel 3 show.

Mr Panya apologised for broadcasting the act and promised such an incident would not happen again.
