Thai skeet shooter aims for Olympic gold

One athlete supporters of the Thai national team should watch is skeet shooter Sutiya Jiewchaloemmit.

Four years ago, she came close to becoming the first Thai athlete other than boxers, weightlifters and taekwondo fighters to win an Olympic medal.

She finished fifth in Beijing – just one point behind the bronze medallist.

The Sa Kaew native, who is affectionately called by her nickname Nee, has since become a household name in Thailand and received financial support from several private companies.

The 26-year-old gets another chance to shoot down an Olympic medal as she is the first Thai to qualify for the London Games thanks to her fourth place at the ISSF World Cup in Beijing in April last year.

Sutiya, who graduated from Thammasat University's Faculty of Commerce and Accountancy, says she is better and ready to erase the 2008 disappointment.

Sutiya, who normally trains in Germany with her personal coach Jan Herik Heinrich, says she has improved since the Beijing Olympics.

She admits that she initially felt under pressure but now feels comfortable with the task ahead as she is now a top 10 shooter in the world.

"I am much better than I was four years ago," she said.

"Athletes from China, the US and Germany are the main threats. But to beat them, I have to beat myself first."

In her last warm-up tournament at the ISSF World Cup in London in April, Sutiya finished fourth, losing to world No.1 Rhode Kimberly of the US in a shoot-off.

"The strong finish at the World Cup has boosted my confidence," said Sutiya who is ranked eighth in the world.

"My preparation has been good and I am ready for the Games.

"At first you may think that qualifying for the Olympics is good enough. But once you are there, you want to win something."
