Wannabe cop

The man seen in a video clip aiming kicks at passing motorcyclists is not a police officer or a volunteer helping traffic police as first thought.

Instead, Mad-ali Him, 35, who yesterday admitted to being the man in the clip, is just a wannabe policeman.

"I have a dream to be a police officer, so I have been regularly observing police performing their duties at traffic checkpoints," he told a press briefing yesterday.

"I did not intend to act violently, because I just wanted to help the police.

"I was terrified and afraid that the motorcycles would hit me. I don't like speeding motorcycles so I kicked them," Mr Mad-ali told reporters.

Metropolitan Police Bureau deputy chief Worasak Noppasitthiporn called the briefing yesterday after police came under heavy criticism from many of those viewing the video on Youtube. As of this morning the video had been viewed almost 400,000 times.

Pol Maj Gen Worasak said Mr Mad-ali was charged with causing injury to other people.

A man, later identified as Mad-ali Him, 35, stands over the two people who were on the second motorcycle.

The incident took place on Soi Kannikar on Rama 3 Road, where several police officers gathered to search bikers for drugs and fine those who did not wear safety helmets.

A man in casual clothes, initially thought to be a police officer, attempted to stop two motorcycles by kicking at them. The first motorcycle managed to get away but the second overbalanced and fell to the ground.

Two people on the second motorcycle fell off and one of them, a woman, injured her leg, according to a message posted by the clip uploader.

The attacker removed the key from the fallen motorcycle as a police officer then came to inspect the two bikers as they were gathering themselves from the fall.

The uploader of the video said he was driving a car behind the motorcycle. He then rolled down his car window and asked the officer who was holding a ticket book, "Why are you doing this to the public?"

"Well, I didn't kick you," the officer replied.

The driver then told him that he had a camera and was recording the incident. The officer did not respond and told him to leave the scene immediately without searching him.
