Chachoengsao industry chief Surapol Suthijinda said he shut the two plants for violating factory and health laws.

He said both operators had allowed chemical-contaminated water to leak into public waterways near their premises. Also, untreated industrial waste and chemicals were transported from the plants and dumped.

The plant operators will be prosecuted for violating industrial and public health laws and lose their licences, he said, adding they would also have to pay the costs to clean up the contaminated areas.

Supranee Phanomchon, a 50-year-old villager in tambon Nong Haen of Phanom Sarakham district, said chemicals were dumped on land next to her house. She said the dumping was adversely affecting her life and officials had yet to inspect the dumping ground which is surrounded by high fences.
