Evening update

It's party time on Lan Pho Road in Kamphaeng Phet province where anxious residents can now relax after local hero Kaew Pongprayoon won a close, but deserved 13-12 victory over David Ayrapetyan of Russia to reach the finals of the Olympic light-flyweight (49-kg) division.

There can be no complaints about the judging in this fight as it appeared to many that Kaew should have won the fight by a few more points.

Both fighters were quick and strong, but Kaew appeared to have just a little bit extra, mixing head and body punches slightly better than his Russian opponent. The judges scored the first and final round even, so it was Kaew's 6-5 second round that sent him to the final.

Kaew is now assured of a silver medal but he will be going all out against the defending Olympic champion Zou Shiming of China. Zou definitely looked beatable against Ireland's Paddy Barnes and he was lucky to emerge the winner. The score was tied at 15-15, so the decision had to be based on the individual judges scorecards.

Boxer Kaew wants more than bronze

Lan Pho Road in Kamphaeng Phet province will be closed to traffic today.

There’s nothing wrong with it but the space is needed for a special event.

A large projector screen is being set up for residents to cheer local boxing hero Kaew Pongprayoon as he takes on David Ayrapetyan of Russia at 7.45pm in the Olympic light-flyweight (49-kg) semi-final.

Kaew has already clinched at least a bronze medal, but he wants more.

"My 12-year wait for an Olympic medal is over," said Kaew, who is fighting in his first Olympics. "But my mission is not yet complete – my target is to win gold for all Thais."

For his dream to come true, Kaew must be at his best to beat Ayrapetyan, said Thailand’s boxing coach Thong Taweekhun.

‘‘It will be a very difficult fight for Kaew because the Russian is strong,’’ he said.

‘‘I think the bout will be determined by only one point or two.’’

Ayrapetyan, 29, is an aggressive boxer who lacks accuracy, the coach said.

‘‘I am sure Kaew will win,’’ Thong said.

Standing at 1.60m, Kaew is 2cm taller than the Russian.

The Russian was a bronze medallist while the Thai reached the quarter-finals at last year’s world championships.

Kaew is now the only boxer who could save his boss’s face and job.

Following Kaew’s quarter-final win, Gen Boolert Kaewprasit, president of the Thailand Boxing Association reaffirmed his vow to quit as the country’s amateur boxing boss if the team returns home without a gold medal.

‘‘I am happy with Kaew’s performance,’’ said Boonlert.

‘‘But a bronze is not our ultimate target — we want gold. If we do not win gold, I will step down as TBA president.’’
