An Islamic teacher was killed and private property destroyed in 10 attacks spread over three districts of Pattani province on Wednesday night.
The incidents, which preceded the Harirayo or the end of the fasting period late this week, prompted police and military units to step up security measures in Pattani provincial town.
They occurred between 5.10pm on Wednesday and 12.20am on Thursday.
At 5.10pm, an unexploded bomb was found by the side of a building at a village in tambon Khok Pho of Khok Pho district. It was a timed home-made bomb stuffed in a cocoa can three inches in diameter and five inches long connected to two 9-volt batteries.
It was destroyed by a bomb disposal unit.
Later at 6.35pm, Royali Hawae Keji, 51, a teacher at Sai Buri Islam Witthaya School, was shot dead by militants while returning home on a motorcycle on Sai Buri - Panare road in Sai Buri district.
About 8pm, six incidents occurred at six different spots in Nong Chik district.
Three mobile telephone signal posts at three spots - two in tambons Bang Khao and one in tambon Tuyong - were set on fire and damaged.
A fire broke out on a shelf at a 7-Eleven convenience store in tambon Toyong, but was quickly put out causing little damage. Some materials used for setting the fire were found at the scene.
Similar materials were also found at another 7-Eleven shop in tambon Bo Thong. They were removed before they could cause damage.
At the same time, a power transformer at a village in tambon Tuyong was shot at and damaged by gunmen, causing a blackout in the area.
About 8.30pm, a bomb was found at Saeng Charoen fertiliser shop at Village No 6 in tambon Khok Pho of Khok Pho district. It was a timed bomb inside a cocoa can, similar to the one found earlier in the same district. It was destroyed by a police bomb team.
About 20 minutes after midnight, a fire was started at a petrol station in tambon Ma Krut of Khok Pho district. One petrol pump was damaged.
About the same time, a power transformer and 10 security cameras in the area were shot at and damaged.
